B.S. 1990, M.S. 1992, Ph.D. 1997 — Information and Computer Science

Ken Anderson is Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science in the College of Engineering & Applied Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is broadly interested in the fields of software engineering, hypermedia, computer-supported cooperative work, and human-computer interaction. His research contributed to the success of Project EPIC, an NSF-funded research project on the topic of crisis informatics. Anderson led the work on the creation of Project EPIC’s large-scale data collection infrastructure that was used to collect social media data on hundreds of natural disaster events across a period of ten years, contributing to the detailed analysis of how members of the public make use of social media during times of crisis. Over his career, Anderson has graduated 13 Ph.D. students and received more than $13 million in grants to support his research program.

As Associate Dean for Education of the College of Engineering and Applied Science from 2016-2019, Anderson led student success efforts that helped to change policy at both the college and campus levels to create a more welcoming environment in support of students achieving their academic and professional goals. Since becoming Chair in 2019, Anderson has overseen significant growth of the Department in terms of faculty and staff, undergraduate and graduate programs, and research efforts, and has led the department’s efforts in broadening participation in computing. While a student at UCI, Anderson played trombone and baritone for UCI’s jazz band, wind ensemble, and basketball band from 1986 to 1996, stopping only so he could focus on completing his Ph.D.!
